2000 Scenic Definitives.

Definitives Tour.

The second post of our Scenic Definitives will only cover one year, 2000. The six value 2000 issue of Scenic Definitives was designed as an add-on to the previous 1996.97 issue which was still currently on sale. The stamps were issued in two sets, 4 values in March 2000 and the remaining 2 in October. In between, in April, the $1.10 stamp was reproduced in an adhesive format.

6 March 2000.

The Otago Peninsula - $1.00.                           The Kaikoura Coast - $1.10.

The Otago Peninsula - $1.00.
Taiaroa Head is a headland at the end of the Otago Peninsula in New Zealand, overlooking the mouth of the Otago Harbour. With a light showing up to 23km out to sea, tt was established in 1864 to guide ships to the harbour. The Otago Peninsula has a colony of over 100 northern royal albatrosses, which established itself in 1919, - the only such colony on an inhabited mainland. Border design of the stamp is the red-billed gull also found at Taiaroa Head.
Look out for this lighthouse again in Mary's posts on the NZ Government Life Insurance stamps.

The Kaikoura Coast - $1.10.
The Kaikoura Coast, set against the awe-inspiring, snow-capped Seaward Kaikoura Range. Border design – the seals of Kaikoura Coast.
One of the best ways to see this coast is to take the train journey from Picton to Christchurch. For much of the trip the train runs just above the beach and rocks. I like boats and trains so that is how I get to Christchurch if I can.

 Great Barrier Island - $2.00.                               Cape Kidnappers - $3.00.

Great Barrier Island - $2.00.
Great Barrier Island, a large island lying 25km east of Auckland was the first place in New Zealand to use ‘airmail’ postage, when pigeons carried mail to and from the mainland. Border design – the native toi toi of Great Barrier Island. See our post on 1897 Great Barrier Pigeon Post.
My main experience of Great Barrier Island was pig hunting back in the late 1970s. Steep rugged country but good hunting, the people were friendly and plenty of good food. I always enjoyed my visits to this island.

 Cape Kidnappers - $3.00.
Cape Kidnappers in Hawke's Bay, home to one of the world’s two known mainland gannet colonies – large, powerful seabirds known for their plummeting 145 kilometre-per-hour dives for fish. Border design – the gannets of Cape Kidnappers. You get to the gannet colonies by riding in trailers pulled by tractors along the beach. You then climb up to view the gannets from quite close viewing areas.

Perf Shift - $3.00 Cape Kidnappers.
A vertical perf shift has left the top of each stamp appearing on the bottom of the one above.
A interesting effect is created in this pair.

Issued 3 April 2000.
The Kaikoura Coast - $1.10 (Adhesive).
The stamp from the March Issue in self-adhesive format.

Issued 2 October 2000.

Rangitoto Island - 90c.                                            Lake Camp - $1.30.

90c - Rangitoto Booklet. A block of 4 imperforated stamps.
A slight kiss cut impression can be seen in places but no cuts.

  Rangitoto Island - 90c.
The design features the gentle, symmetrical shape of Rangitoto Island, one of the most distinctive landmarks of the Hauraki Gulf.  This superb volcanic landscape is home to the largest pohutukawa forest in the world. There are photographs of this island with large area covered in bare volcanic rock. Now the island is completely covered in vegetation.
If you ever get the chance to take the climb to the top it is well worth the effort. The view from the summit is amazing. We all did it a couple of years ago, had a picnic up there and then got back down with time for a swim before our return ferry arrived. For those who can't make the walk they have special wagons behind a tractor that take you almost to the top.

Lake Camp - $1.30.
The design features Lake Camp in south Canterbury. this small lake is situated on the plateau between the headwaters of the Rangitata and South Branch Ashburton Rivers. I have never visited this lake and have been unable to find much about it but I believe it is a long narrow high country lake that holds a good population of rainbow and brown trout. Sounds like a good fishing spot.
